Eva Brann on Patriotism

Certain people, particularly intellectuals, hold opinions so far abstracted from the concrete conditions of life that they cleverly start sawing off the branch they are perched on.

Thus the legendary St. John’s College tutor Eva Brann. Fair enough. But can’t one envision circumstances in which sawing off a branch on which one is sitting might be deemed reasonable?
